When the Martins first arrived, the kids were small enough that the gravel road felt like an adventure.
Emma was nine and determined to prove she was brave. Her little brother Josh was six and mostly interested in catching frogs.
Across the lawn, another family was unloading a canoe.
“Go say hi,” their mom said.
Emma rolled her eyes.
But ten minutes later she and Josh were already on the dock with two strangers: Mia, who had freckles and a fearless cannonball jump, and Liam, who claimed he could paddle a canoe faster than any adult.
By sunset they were already a team.
Summer days at Bonnie Lake followed a rhythm all their own. Morning meant bikes rattling over gravel paths.
The kids would race past cottages, shouting greetings to sleepy parents drinking coffee on porches.
“Last one to the dock is a rotten egg!” They swam until their fingers wrinkled.
They built rafts out of driftwood and rope someone found behind the boat shed. They paddled the canoe to the far side of the lake where a secret rock made the best jumping spot.
Lunch was whatever someone’s mom had packed: peanut butter sandwiches, apples, and bags of chips that somehow tasted better beside the water.
By afternoon the whole place hummed with life; electric boats buzzing, kids laughing, wind rattling through the tall pines.
