Shared by Rhonda, this blog tells her personal stories of growing up in cottage country. From her earliest memories in Muskoka, to Sauble Beach, and Buckhorn, Rhonda shares that she will forever be thankful to her parents for giving her the opportunity to grow up experiencing everything you get to enjoy from cottage life.

Memories…

Every summer of my childhood felt like stepping into a story I never wanted to end. The moment school let out, I knew exactly where I belonged…at the cottage, where laughter echoed louder, days stretched longer, and life felt beautifully simple.

Some of my earliest memories begin on the drive to Muskoka. Anticipation would build with every passing mile, but nothing compared to that magical moment when I saw Weber’s bridge. To anyone else, it may have just been a landmark but to me, it meant one thing, I was almost “home.” And “home” wasn’t just a place, it was a feeling of peace, family, and pure summer joy.

One unforgettable summer, my Daddy was transferred to Sauble Beach to oversee a construction project. That year brought a different kind of adventure. Lake Huron was wild and powerful, and no matter how hard I tried to stand strong, the waves would knock me over again and again. I’d come up laughing every time, sand in my hair, joy in my heart. Those moments taught me how to embrace the unexpected and find happiness in the simplest things.

As I grew older, my summers took me to Buckhorn, where teenage days were filled with freedom and friendship. We spent hours fishing under the warm sun, diving into the water, and laughing until our stomachs hurt. Evenings slowed down in the best way, gathered around the table with my Mom and Aunt June rolling dice and playing Yahtzee, sharing stories and creating traditions I didn’t realize then would mean so much later.

The rhythm of cottage life became the heartbeat of my childhood…campfires crackling under starlit skies, gooey s’mores, early morning fishing, spontaneous swims, and the constant presence of people I loved. Friends were always welcome, and somehow, my parents made everything feel effortless and magical. I truly believed I had the coolest mom and dad in the world.

Looking back, it wasn’t just the places that made those summers unforgettable, it was the time spent together. The laughter, the games, the quiet moments, and the loud ones too. It was the feeling of being completely present, surrounded by love.

The memories are endless, woven together like a warm summer sunset that never quite fades. And my gratitude for my parents runs deeper than words can express. They gave me more than just beautiful summers, they gave me a childhood rooted in connection, joy, and memories that will last a lifetime.
