A rainy day at the cottage can inspire some of the most memorable times with your family. Whether you’re playing games, making crafts, or enjoying a cozy movie afternoon, there are plenty of ways to make the most of a rainy day. So if the weather isn’t cooperating, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with fun, simple ideas to keep everyone smiling!

Bring on the Board Games

Rainy days and board games go hand in hand, they’re the perfect opportunity to spark some friendly competition and connect with your loved ones. Hopefully you brought some of your own, but don’t fret if you haven’t; a quick trip to your on-site store or rec hall will provide you with all the games you need. This could be the perfect opportunity to introduce your kids to some of your favourite games!

If you only have a deck of cards, then perhaps it’s time to whip out Go Fish, or maybe you have a cribbage board lying around. Whatever the game, it’s the company you’re playing it with that really matters.

Here’s a tip, if you’re reading this with the sun shining, get some games now! You’ll be thanking your past self when the day comes that you need them.

Rock Painting: The perfect way to decorate your garden. Find your favourite rocks and paint them like little bugs, animals, or give them a pretty pattern. When the sun is back, you’ll have a lovely pop of colour for your gardens!

Friendship Bracelets: All you need is some thread, and beads too if you want to get fancy.

Postcards: You can use recycled cardboard or any paper you have lying around for this one. Whip out the pens, markers, crayons, and whatever else you’ve got and make some fun Great Blue postcards to send to your favourite people!

Rainy Day Journals: Journaling is a great way to capture your favourite memories and can be an amazing keepsake to look back on years from now. This is a great practice for anyone of any age, so get comfy, and get writing about your favourite parts of your trip so far. Think about what has made you smile, what you’re grateful for, and what you look forward to.

Cottage Cinema

Close the blinds, dim the lights, and turn your cottage into your own mini movie theatre. With clouds overhead, this is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon or evening. Don’t just put any random movie on, make this a proper event!

Set up a fun fort with pillows, blankets, and couch cushions. Pop some popcorn (or prepare any yummy snack), and come up with a theme. Do you want to watch some Cartoon Classics? Or maybe a couple of movies that feature being at the cottage? Get cozy and cuddle up for the best movie night ever!

Rainy Relaxation

Sometimes a rainy day is a good opportunity to slow down. Here are some nice activities if you and your family just need some low-energy relaxation time.

Reading: Have a book that you’ve been bringing with you everywhere, but you never find a time to actually sit down and read it? Here’s your chance. Or perhaps you could trade books with your friends/neighbours around the resort, make it a book club!

Calm Creativity: Not every craft needs to be a big, messy ordeal. Whip out the sketch book, sit down with a colouring book, or take the time to finish a good puzzle. Lose yourself in the activity with some music or a video on as well if that’s what you enjoy.

Yoga: Maybe you’re a meditation master, or maybe you’ve never tried it at all, but a rainy day is the perfect chance to stretch out and slow things down with a bit of yoga. Clear a space in the living room, roll out a mat or towel, and put on a guided video from YouTube, or just go with the flow! Kids can get involved too, Yoga is a great way to release tension, get some movement in, and feel grounded no matter what the weather’s doing outside. Plus, it’s a relaxing way to spend quality time together without screens or distractions.
